WellPoint, InTune: Pitch Video

This is a Flash movie for a pilot program WellPoint was trying to launch. They may have been a bit ahead of their time. This was a couple years ago and I think the idea of "wellness" was probably a little too new for mainstream employers.

The InTune sales force used this video as a way to get companies excited about the product. One of my original ideas involved talking furniture or office supplies. (Say what you want about office supplies but they aren't unionized so they aren't expensive actors.)

Again, Blogger's compression isn't the best but I think you'll be able to get the idea.

Challenge, Pitch Work

The client didn't get this.

It's one of those Archive style ads that perhaps only people that read Archive get. Not people who read Sunset magazine or Via (that's AAA's magazine, btw). Andres did the layout. Beautiful stuff.

For stuff that actually ran (mostly),

Experian, Corporate Video

The tales I could tell about the creation of this video could fill a book.

Anyway, this piece was designed to give the audience the layman's version of what Experian is all about. This was designed for external use as well as internal use. Experian can be so complex that sometimes Experian employees have a hard time figuring out how to position their services to the world.

Here it is (the download version looks a lot better than the Blogger version. The choice is yours):

SanDisk, Flocking Hell

Comics? Is this still advertising. Yes.

When we launched the iDon't campaign for SanDisk, we bought up a lot of media space. Some of that media space included ads in The Onion. (That's where I get all my news.)

So we decided to create a comic that brought to life the Sheep concept from the original campaign. The multi-talented art director Brian Shown did all the illustrations and I wrote all the panels. (Little known fact: There was a Flocking Hell comic that included a Steve Jobsian figure at one point but it was judged to be too racy.)

This comic was a great sample of how you expand the idea of a campaign beyond just a print ad or banner. This is almost sponsored-content. Which is something everyone in the ad industry is going to find themselves faced with at some point. Personally, I think that's pretty exciting.

Plug For Me.

Here's the link to my portfolio. You'll have to side-step some annoying banners for now. (My technology team is working on a more user friendly interface. Stay tuned.)

Experian, Direct Mail Piece

The Experian campaign was piloted in New York city and New York city alone.

We followed up the campaign with this direct mail pieced that was sent to a list of 500 influential business people in New York. So if they knew about Experian, they'd tell their friends about Experian, etc.

The box included real working binoculars that had, like, an MP3 player in it. Okay, it wasn't an MP3 player it was more like a flash drive which you could then use to download the picture. All in all, a pretty cool idea.

So what were the results? Still not sure. A mailing of 500 people is pretty darn small so let's hope those 500 people were pretty influential.

My Portfolio. Download and distribute at will.

This is what I've done lately. And, there's more where this came from. Especially with Tonik. You could fill a dumpster with everything I've done for Tonik. Not that the work belongs in a dumpster mind you.

And when you click on the link you'll have to negotiate one of those free iPods ads or something similar to get to the download. (I know, know. It's a pain in the ass but DivShare's free.)

WellPoint, E2E Launch Video

Note: this video at its real size looks freakin' cool. Squashed by Blogger's compression, not so much.

Some folks at WellPoint liked our video for BeneFits so much that they wanted us to repeat its success with another launch video for their Quote to Card process. Sounds pretty sexy already doesn't it?

Well, anyway the insight for this video was that agents tend to operate in the past and not all of them have embraced the new technology (the "WWW." You might've heard of it.) So we created this piece to demonstrate how simple the process of doing more business online actually is. And this is all based on what WellPoint told us, which was, basically, "amongst carriers, we're actually tech-savvy."

Everything was done in-house: music, animation, production, Flash, voice/over talent (multi-talented copywriter Kevin Frank), etc. Yet it still managed to run over budget. However by that time, the account person in charge had left the country. Literally, he's in Shanghai now.

WellPoint, BeneFits: Small Business Health Coverage

Here's a web site that I wrote for WellPoint. It's aimed at small businesses and was supposed to make it easy for them to sign up online. However, no matter how much red tape we thought we could cut through, you couldn't get around the fact that it took filling out about 45 pages (on the web site) to even submit an application. Maybe it was more than 45 pages.

Despite that, the web site still came out pretty good and had a nice friendly vibe and all that.

Check out the site for yourself here.

BMW Service Counter TV

A BMW spot for one of the hardest things to understand about BMW: Their Ultimate Service plan. No one else has it.

This spot does as good of a job as any as explaining it as anyone else has done.

BMW, CPO Radio: Dave, Rebecca, Stan

I always wanted to get a BMW radio spot on my reel and fortunately, earlier this year, the advertising gods were in a good mood or something and allowed us to get these three spots through the gauntlet of dealers, regional marketing reps, and national marketing people.

"Dave."

"Rebecca"

BeneFits Launch Video Causes Dylan to Prematurely Rollover in His Grave.

Who's pumped about a web site that makes it easy to provide employee benefits to small companies? We created this video for our WellPointAnthemBlueCrossBlueShield client to promote the Ben-Knee-Fits (they pronounce it like that. Don't ask why.) web site.

Dylan wanted $11,000 to use his original song. About a quarter of our budget. We chose a cheaper albeit less-memorable option.

Tonik, Beach Games Videos

One of the fun little PSA style videos that we did for Tonik at the Beach Game. Not content to just write these, I also did the music. If they'd let me at, I'd probably take a shot at all that Flash stuff, too. In fact, these all used in-house talent. Sean the receptionist, Rob the account guy. For a while there, anyone who looked 25-ish was going to be asked at some point to appear in something Tonik-related.

Tonik, Radio: Benefit Concert

This is my favorite radio spot. Ever. I'm not saying it's the best, it's just the one I enjoy the most. It's one of those radio spots with a donut. And not a delicious glazed donut, a donut more like a radio spot with a hole in the middle that an agent can then personalize with their information.

Tonik, Radio: Rollerblader

Radio for Tonik. We only did a few of them. Here's one.

Tonik: Music Magazine Ads

This is a series of ads
that ran in Blender magazine. Which explains why they're music related.

For Tonik, we always tried to shade the creative to wherever the creative was going to run. Luckily, we never had to run any ads in Ladies Home Journal or Sunset magazine.

Tonik Goes to the Beach Games. Beach Games Survive.

So Tonik was a sponsor at the Beach Games in 2006 and the two coolest guys on the team were sent to document it. Yes, i'm talking of course about the account team.

Anyway, as you'll see on this video, Tonik was everywhere. We got to design hats, clothes, booths, banners, videos for the monitors and all kinds of fun stuff.

Tonik Print Ad Number One

The first print ad we did on this project. This, and the web site, helped set the tone for everything else that followed.

This, I believe, along with a lot of other stuff was featured on a Daily Show segment where the interviewer was (cue drum roll) Ed Helms, now of NBC's The Office. Yep, Tonik helped, err, turn him into a star.

Tonik Print: Ad Number Two

Try to think of a health insurance product out there that's targeted to 18-30 year olds. Call me when you can think of one.

Tonik is a Wellpoint insurance product that was different than anything else they -- or their competition -- offered.

Tonik Email, Part Three: The "Yes" Page

If you said "no" and then were intrigued enough by our landing page, this is what'd you get: a final, friendly, suggestion that you really might need Tonik. Okay, it's not curing cancer or anything but it demonstrates that any assignment, no matter how inconsequential, can be turned into an opportunity.

Click for enlargement.

Tonik Email: Part Two, the Landing Page

Say "No Thanks to Tonik, I'd rather be a long distance trucker" and this is where you land. Saying no has never been more interesting.

To read everything, and you should, click on the image.

Tonik Email, Part One: The Email

Who says an email has to be boring? While working on Tonik we took a radical approach to creating a whole email program that truly dramatized--in a fun way--what options you had available if you said "no" to Tonik. Click to enlarge the hilarity of this email.

Tonik: Rodeo Clown

In real life, this is a 728x90 banner but apparently DivShare and Blogger aren't going to help a copywriter out by making things easier for him. Oh well. You can still get the idea though.

Follow the link to watch the banner. You might have to squint a little:

Tonik: FHM Ads, Part Three

The last of the Tonik ads that were intended for FHM (to see the others, check below. Just love the backwards world of bloggin'.)

Tonik: FHM Ads, Part Two

More FHM material for Tonik.

Tonik: FHM Ads, Part One

This series of ads was originally supposed to run in FHM magazine FHM

But once the client had a good look at FHM, they had a change of heart. The ads are still perfect though.

Half-Baked

Here's an ad I wrote for Roman Meal. It appeared in the Hall of Fame issue of Baking News. (But I'm sure you already got your copy and reading that was redundant.)

If you want to see the ad bigger (and who wouldn't?) click on it.

Communication Arts Finally Recognizes Some Good Work.

Always nice to get a little ink. Here's a link to the Communications Art web site where the Beat Museum posters that I worked on got a little writeup. (Kudos to BC for helping to make this happen.)
